So Many Choices!

While selecting your senior portraits may be exciting, it can also feel overwhelming when choosing from a beautiful gallery of images. Many seniors and their families tend to choose similar photos, focusing on a few favorite poses or expressions.

Loving certain images is natural, but your senior portraits should showcase the full range of your personality during this unforgettable time.

If you’re not sure where to start, that’s okay. You don’t have to figure it out alone. As your photographer, I’m here to help guide you through the process. Whether you’re deciding what to print, narrowing things down for announcements, or just trying to pick a set that feels like you, I’ve got you covered.

Below are a few tips to help you choose a well-rounded collection, one that shows your personality, your style, and the heart of your senior year.

Embrace Different Expressions

Senior portraits are about more than your best smile. Be sure to pick photos that capture a range of emotions, such as a candid laugh, a thoughtful gaze, or a more serious expression. Including these different moods not only highlights your unique personality but also gives your gallery an authentic feel.

Select Different Backgrounds

If your photo session took place in multiple locations, take advantage of the variety! Pick images from each backdrop to showcase the whole story and your senior portrait experience. Even if your session took place at one location, you will notice various spots offer different colors, textures, and environments for your photo backgrounds. Mix things up to add depth and dimension to your final gallery.

Include Close-Up and Full-Body Shots

When browsing your gallery, be sure to include a combination of close-up and full-body photos. Close-ups show off your facial expressions and emotions, whereas full-body images give a sense of style, location, and overall mood. Having a balance of both types ensures that your portraits feel dynamic and well-rounded.

Look for Natural, Candid Moments

Although posed photos make you look like a model, some of the most memorable images often come from candid moments. These types of photos capture you moving in the environment and contain laughter or thoughtful gazes. Choosing a few candid shots will give your gallery a more natural and spontaneous feel and show different sides of your personality.

Add a Few Creative Photos

Beyond capturing your personality, senior portraits should reflect your creativity and originality. Your photographer likely experimented with different angles, lighting, or even props during your session to keep things fun. Consider picking a few of these shots to add flair and showcase your artistic or adventurous side.

Vary Wardrobe Choices

If you wore multiple outfits during your session, select a few images from each look in your gallery. A range of outfits shows off the different sides of your personality, reflecting everything from a casual vibe to something more formal.

Think About the Story You Want to Tell

Senior portraits tell the story of your final year in high school. Think about how each photo fits into that story. Do the photos represent who you are, your passions, and future aspirations? When selecting your images, try to include photos that reflect your journey and highlight what makes you, you.

Don’t Overlook Black-and-White Photos

If your gallery includes both color and black-and-white images, make sure to incorporate both. Black-and-white photos give a timeless, artistic quality that often evokes deeper emotions, making your images stand out. Selecting a few black-and-white portraits for your gallery can give it an elegant, classic feeling.

Get Input from Family and Friends

Even though your senior portraits are about you, sometimes getting feedback from a trusted friend or family member can help. They may notice something special in a photo that you overlooked, or encourage you to pick an image that feels particularly “you.” Just be sure that the final selections reflect your vision and not just someone else’s preferences.

Visualize Your Portrait Usage

When making final selections, take into account how you plan to use your portraits. Will they be displayed as prints in your home, included in your graduation announcement, or shared on social media? Consider a variety of images that can serve different purposes. For example, a full-body shot with a more environmental background might look great framed for your grandmother, while a close-up candid makes a perfect pick for your graduation invites.

Create a Collection That’s Truly You

Your senior year is a milestone worth celebrating with a gallery of portraits that capture all of who you are. By selecting a range of images that showcase different expressions, settings, and moments, you’ll walk away with a collection that truly reflects your unique personality and the many facets of your senior year.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I select the photos that I want?
Your photographer will have created a favorites list in your online gallery. To add photos to the list, select the heart icon. You can add/delete images as you review your photos. When you have your favorites list complete, send it to your photographer by pressing the “submit to photographer” button.

Can I pick all posed or all candid photos?
I recommend a mix of posed and natural images. Posed photos capture your best angles while candid images feel more authentic and add energy and personality to your gallery.

My Mom and I don’t seem to agree on our choices. What can we do?
To start, each of you should create an independent favorites list. Your photographer can compare your lists and let you know which of the photos you both chose. This will start your final list. You can then divide the remainder of your choices in half to fulfill the other selections.

What if I’m unsure about choosing images?
If you’re unsure, I’m happy to help guide you through the selection process. We can go over your photos together and make sure you’re choosing a diverse collection that represents the best of your session.
