Benji celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at Nevei Kodesh in Boulder with a day full of heart, family, and joy. He led the service, read from the Torah, and then celebrated with a Kiddush Luncheon at Chautauqua Dining Hall with his family and friends. The entire day reflected his kind spirit, sense of responsibility, and love for both people and animals.
Preparing for the Day
Part of Benji’s Bar Mitzvah journey involved giving back to his community. An avid animal lover, he spent several days volunteering at the Boulder Humane Society. He walked dogs, cleaned enclosures, and cared for cats and dogs waiting for homes. Through this project, he discovered how compassion and responsibility connect to Jewish values of service and tzedakah.
His printed Mitzvah program included a meaningful quote that captured the spirit of the day:
“When we become more fully aware that our success is due in large measure to the loyalty, helpfulness, and encouragement we have received from others, our desire grows to pass on similar gifts. Gratitude spurs us on to prove ourselves worthy of what others have done for us. The spirit of gratitude is a powerful energizer.” – Wilferd A. Peterson
The Bar Mitzvah Ceremony at Nevei Kodesh
The Mitzvah day began at Nevei Kodesh in Boulder, where Benji received his tallit and read from the Torah. He chanted blessings, led the congregation, and carried the heavy Torah scroll around the room. As he walked, people reached out to honor the sacred text, a sign of trust in his new responsibilities as a Jewish adult.
Guests showered Benji with candy, a tradition that symbolizes the sweet life ahead. Afterward, he played the piano alongside the other musicians, filling the sanctuary with music. The ceremony closed with challah and grape juice, a beautiful way to complete the morning service.
A Joyful Kiddush Luncheon at Chautauqua Dining Hall
After the service, guests boarded a party bus with lights and entertainment and traveled to Chautauqua Dining Hall for the Kiddush Luncheon. Parking on a summer weekend in Boulder can be difficult, so this thoughtful detail kept the celebration stress-free.
The heat of the day encouraged everyone to gather beneath the shade trees outside the Dining Hall for cocktail hour. Guests mingled, signed the photo board, and caught up with one another before moving inside.
For the luncheon, guests shared a family-style meal with dishes passed around each table. In the background, a digital slideshow projected on a large screen highlighted key moments from Benji’s life. All around the room, the table settings and the decorative touches reflected Benji’s passion for sports, including basketball, soccer, frisbee, and football. The sports theme dictated the colors of the day in navy, cream, brown, and orange.
After eating, everyone socialized and looked forward to the sweets ahead. Dessert featured a hand-made ice cream buffet with an assortment of tempting toppings. When everyone had had their fill, the family gathered outside under the shade trees for portraits. The natural backdrop created a perfect ending to a day filled with joy, love, and togetherness.
A Personal Wish for Benji
Besides the sparkle in his eyes, what stood out most to me about Benji was the stories about his kind heart and spirit. His mom shared how he once greeted a man while walking the dog. The man later returned to their door to say that simple hello meant everything. He had lost his wife some time ago and had been feeling lost and unseen. That moment of kindness captures who Benji is.
Mazel tov, Benji! Wishing you much joy and sweetness in the years ahead.

About the Dining Venue
The Chautauqua Dining Hall has been a Boulder landmark since 1898. Builders completed the Victorian-style structure in just 40 days, and it originally seated 400 people. Its first manager, Oliver T. Jackson, was a local Black entrepreneur who later founded the African American community of Dearfield, Colorado. Today, the Dining Hall serves meals year-round with local beers, wines, and views of the Flatirons.
